Our Origins
In the 1730s, the Square Mile was home to an estimated 1,500 gin distilleries. Today, only one remains. Square Mile Distillery stands in the heart of the City, reviving a tradition that helped make London the home of gin.
London played a pivotal role in the development of modern gin. The city’s merchants imported exotic botanicals from around the world, helping shape the distinctive styles of gin enjoyed today.
Founded on the award-winning expertise of Wessex Distillery, Square Mile Distillery represents a new chapter in British craft spirits. Wessex Distillery, a family-run enterprise based in the Surrey Hills, earned national recognition when it was named UK Gin Producer of the Year at the 2022 IWSC Producer Trophy Awards. Judges praised the quality and consistency of its range, awarding 95-point Gold Medals to both its Old Tom and English Sloe Gins.
